Aston Villa fans all say the same thing about Ollie Watkins after England's draw v Slovenia

England continued their poor performances at Euro 2024 as they played out a dull 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night.

That result did see England top their group, but one win and two draws against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia is not the most inspiring start to the tournament.

England looked blunt in attack as Aston Villa duo Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa once again watched on from the bench.

When you consider England have only scored two goals in their three games so far it is easy to see why fans are growing increasingly frustrated at what they are seeing from Gareth Southgate’s side.

Harry Kane has struggled to have an impact across three games, leaving Villa fans baffled as to Watkins’ lack of involvement.

Aston Villa fans annoyed at Ollie Watkins’ lack of England chance

Watkins is fresh off the back of the best season of his career, having scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions.

Watkins has so far played just 20 minutes – coming off the bench against Serbia – and many Villa fans took to ‘X’ to voice their frustrations at Southgate’s refusal to give the striker an opportunity to break the deadlock against Slovenia.

One fan wrote: “Justice for Ollie Watkins. Criminal he doesn’t get any game time, especially in a game that needed a spark. Southgate is clueless.”

“You feel for him. Excelling for his club whilst we’re under the worst England manager in a lifetime” another added. While one said: “How can you watch that match and not realise we needed Watkins on. Southgate is clueless.”

Another echoed the same sentiment, saying: “That game was crying out for your number 9 to be on the last man and make those runs in behind. Kane dropping far too deep. I really feel for Watkins as it’s clear Southgate will never drop Kane.”

Can Watkins displace Harry Kane for England?

Kane has been England’s undisputed starting striker for a number of years.

However, the Bayern Munich striker missed the end of the season with a back injury and has looked lethargic and lacking sharpness in the group stages of the Euros.

Southgate did substitute England’s record goalscorer against Denmark with the score 1-1, giving Watkins his only minutes of the tournament so far in the process.

England instantly looked more threatening, with Watkins running in behind and causing the Danish defenders more problems than Kane had previously despite his goal.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely Southgate will drop Kane regardless of his performances so Watkins’ and Villa fans’ frustrations look set to continue.
