'Really good': Ange Postecoglou hails £55m striker who Tottenham looked at signing two years ago

Ange Postecoglou has now heaped praise on a striker Tottenham considered signing for Antonio Conte in 2022.

The Australian was alongside the likes of Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian Wright on Tuesday night for ITV Sport as England sleepwalked towards a drab 0-0 draw against Slovenia, where he shared some comments on Benjamin Sesko.

So, what did Ange Postecoglou say about the 2022 Tottenham target? Let’s take a look…

Ange Postecoglou praises Benjamin Sesko

The 58-year-old was asked for his thoughts on the Slovenia international’s decision to stay at RB Leipzig for the 2024/25 campaign, despite strong interest from Arsenal.

Postecoglou told ITV Sport: “It’s a smart move for him to stay there for another year. I think there is still some development in him, but really, really good attributes for a striker’s position, for sure.”

These comments come after the Express revealed in July 2022 that Spurs were closely monitoring Sesko while he was playing for RB Salzburg in Austria.

The 21-year-old is now hot property and is known all across Europe, even more so thanks to his impressive displays at EURO 2024 so far this summer, where he has earned praise from Lee Dixon on commentary duty, amongst other pundits.

Sesko – who has a £55m release clause – scored 18 goals and also provided two assists for RB Leipzig in 42 appearances across the 2023/24 campaign.

Tottenham need someone like the RB Leipzig No.30 now

Spurs could wait for next summer and compete to sign the Slovenian, but we believe Postecoglou needs a dominant No.9 as soon as possible.

Tottenham looked very impressive at times last season, but it feels as if there are too many wide forwards, such as Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Heung-min Son, and not enough traditional strikers, if any.

Postecoglou needs someone to bring the aforementioned trio into the game against more physical sides, as well as a poacher who can score a goal out of nothing when Tottenham’s attacking play is not particularly flowing.

If Spurs had such a player last season, it could well have been the difference between a UEFA Champions League place and a UEFA Europa League spot.
