Report: Derby County summer target now ‘increasingly likely’ to leave his club amid Championship interest

A target Paul Warne chased earlier on in the summer transfer window is now ‘increasingly likely’ to leave his club as several Championship clubs show interest.

Derby County saw their fixtures for the new 2024/25 Championship campaign announced on Wednesday morning.

For supporters, this is where it starts to get real ahead of their first season in the second tier in two years.

Whilst for Paul Warne and his recruitment staff, work is currently ongoing to readily prepare his squad for the difficult challenge of staying up. Birmingham City showed how hard it was last term as they suffered relegation despite accumulating 50 points.

The Rams must recruit the right players to keep them above the dotted line as Warne aims to sign talents for almost every single position.

One area that takes priority is attack, with an update now provided on their pursuit of Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass.

Josh Windass ‘increasingly likely’ to leave Sheffield Wednesday

Following their promotion from League One, Derby were linked with a move for Windass, whose contract at Hillsborough is close to expiring.

Windass helped keep Wednesday in the Championship last term as he found the net in their final three games against Blackburn Rovers, West Brom and Sunderland.

The 30-year-old was offered a new contract to keep him in S6 and as reported earlier this month, Windass was close to an agreement over a new deal.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore as The Star have claimed that it’s ‘increasingly unlikely’ he remains at Wednesday heading into next season, meaning several clubs have been put on red alert.

West Brom ‘make contact’ for Josh Windass

Whilst it has been claimed ambitious League One side Birmingham City remain interested in Windass, it’s their rivals West Brom who have ‘made contact’ with players’ representatives.

That is according to Birmingham World, who claim they want to gauge his level of interest ahead of a proposed move to the Hawthorns.

The Baggies are on the lookout for an attack-minded midfielder who can play on the left, so Windass would certainly tick that box for them.

Derby County’s chances of landing Josh Windass

It hasn’t been said whether Derby are still looking to strike a deal for the Englishman but once he officially leaves Sheffield Wednesday, his future will become more apparent.

Windass has previously been linked with play-off contenders Hull City and Coventry City however, West Brom are the latest club to emerge on the scene.

Derby will expect to be fighting close to the bottom next term whilst the likes of Hull, Coventry and the Baggies will hope to mount a play-off push.

That could make it increasingly difficult for Warne to persuade the former Rangers forward to move to Pride Park and while the Rams could still land him, interest appears to have cooled in recent weeks.
