Derby County’s survival hopes could be decided in one pivotal month after 24/25 fixtures released - opinion

Derby County have discovered their fixture list for the 2024/25 Championship season following their return to the division.

Paul Warne led the Rams back into the second tier last term, confirming a top-two finish in League One at the second time of asking.

Although Derby are still waiting to sign their first player of the transfer window, Warne is reportedly close on a couple, including an unnamed Premier League loan.

Despite their lack of activity in the market, there is plenty for the supporters to be excited about as the new kit is set to be announced on Thursday and fans can now dig their teeth into the 2024/25 fixture list.

Derby travel to Blackburn Rovers for the first match of their Championship campaign on Friday, August 9th before hosting Middlesborough a week later.

Warne will be eager for his side to make a fast start as they aim to fulfil their main aim for the season.

Derby County’s aims for the 2024/25 Championship season

Following the heroics of Ipswich Town, who achieved back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, other sides coming up from the third tier will be having the same dreams.

It’s an achievement that certainly isn’t out of the reach of Derby, who could surprise a few people in the Championship, though their main aim is to consolidate a position in the second tier.

Derby went through years of financial turmoil and point deductions before David Clowes tookover, so now the club crave stability and by staying in the division, they’ll have a solid platform with which to build.

Survival is the minimum ask for most supporters and there is one month in particular that could define their campaign.

Why February is an important month for Derby County

Providing the Rams are in the survival mix heading into February, this could prove to be an important month for Warne’s side.

To survive in the Championship, Derby’s form at Pride Park will be crucial and last season, they accumulated the third most points (49) behind only Bolton and Portsmouth (50).

The Rams found a way to win and as four of their five fixtures in February are at home, collecting as many points as possible during this period could be crucial.

Derby’s February fixture schedule

  • February 1st – Sheffield United (h)
  • February 8th – Norwich City (a)
  • February 11th – Oxford United (h)
  • February 15th – Queens Park Rangers (h)
  • February 22nd – Millwall (h)

Derby’s first match of the month is against relegated Sheffield United, who will no doubt be looking to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

Warne’s men then face a side they came up with, Oxford, as well as two teams in QPR and Millwall who finished in the league’s bottom half and flirted with the idea of relegation last term.

To set Derby up well for a strong March, April and May, claiming at least seven points from those home fixtures could give them a platform to survive.
