Jersey City man charged with murder in triple shooting after arrest in Florida

A 20-year-old Jersey City man wanted for murder in a triple shooting in the Heights neighborhood in April was tracked down in Florida, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced Wednesday.

Darren Estevez was arrested in Orlando Sunday by members of the Orlando Police Department on charges of drug possession and making a false report. Estevez is being held as a fugitive from justice at the Orange County Corrections Department pending extradition to New Jersey.

He is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of aggravated assault in the April 7 shooting at Bowers Street and Central Avenue that left 25-year-old Freddie Posey dead and two others injured.

Estevez is the second person charged in the shooting. During the early phases of the investigation, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested Aaliyah Rivera, 23, also of Jersey City. Rivera is charged with murder as an accomplice and conspiracy to commit murder. She is being detained at the Hudson County jail.

Jersey City police responded to the area of Central and Bowers at approximately 9 p.m. April 7 located two shooting victims and both were transported to Jersey City Medical Center. Posey was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 p.m., while a 30-year-old Jersey City woman was treated for an injury that was not considered life-threatening injury.

A third victim, a 24-year-old Jersey City man, self-transported to University Hospital in Newark with an injury that was not considered life-threatening.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department.
