Pickup driver charged in 90 mph crash that killed N.J. college student

A driver is facing criminal charges in a 90 mph crash that killed a college student last month in Morris County.

Gerald Veneziano, 41, of Belleville, was charged with second-degree reckless vehicular homicide on Friday, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. He has since been released from custody after surrendering his driver’s license and submitting to alcohol testing.

His pickup crashed with a small car on Howard Boulevard in Roxbury around 10:30 p.m. on May 31, officials said. The driver of the other vehicle, Jacob Davis, 19, of Flanders, was pronounced dead on the scene, prosecutors said.

Davis recently completed his freshman year at Northeastern University and was majoring in pre-med and behavioral neuroscience, according to his LinkedIn.com page.

Veneziano’s truck had been traveling 90 mph, authorities said.

Veneziano was treated at Morristown Medical Center for serious internal injuries. Police also found numerous open alcohol containers near his truck, prosecutors said.

On the night of the crash, he received motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, unsafe lane change and operating under the influence of liquor or drugs, according to public court records.

Veneziano will appear in Morris County Superior Court on July 29 for a pre-indictment conference.
