'Outstanding': Ange Postecoglou wowed by 'strong' Euro 2024 player Newcastle have reportedly bid for

Newcastle United are likely to be busy on the transfer front in the coming weeks as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his ranks.

The Magpies already have their first signing of the summer on board, landing Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer once his Bournemouth contract comes to an end.

Newcastle are likely to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, with Loris Karius having left on a free transfer and Martin Dubravka being linked with a move away.

Although James Trafford has been heavily linked with a switch to St James’ Park, the names of other stoppers are doing the rounds on the Newcastle rumour mill.

One such player is currently at Euro 2024 and has helped his nation spring one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.

Ange Postecoglou hails Newcastle target Giorgi Mamardashvili

The player in question is Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has just helped Georgia reach the last 16 at Euro 2024.

Earlier in June, Spanish news outlet COPE claimed that Newcastle made a €41million (£35million) bid to sign the 23-year-old.

According to Marca, Mamardashvili has a big decision to make as he must consider whether to wait for further offers from sides in Europe.

The reported Newcastle target will certainly have more suitors circling now that he has helped Georgia reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

On Wednesday, Mamardashvili kept a clean sheet as the tournament debutants ran out 2-0 winners over Portugal to secure a last-16 tie against Spain.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who has been carrying out punditry duties on ITV, loved what he saw from the 6ft 5in talent.

“They have an outstanding goalkeeper in Mamardashvili,” he said post-match.

“He is one that everyone is tracking. He has had a strong season at Valencia and when you have a strong goalkeeper, who is in form, it keeps you in games.”

Mamardashvili would be a good shout for Newcastle

The Magpies will be disappointed by how last season finished, considering they secured fourth place in 2022/23, and will be eager to strengthen accordingly.

At the same time, Newcastle need to be smart in the market due to profit and sustainability regulations, so they can’t just spend lots of money.

Mamardashvili certainly looks like a good shout for the Magpies, and ticks a lot of boxes.

He’s physically imposing, proving himself at the highest level, shouldn’t be too expensive and, at just 23 years of age, still has a lot of time to develop as a top keeper.
