Alan Shearer responds when asked if he wants to become England manager

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been in the news of late.

An important figure in English football, Shearer has been one of the leading pundits on the BBC’s coverage of England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

The Newcastle icon also conducts a podcast with fellow Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker and the two were pretty scathing in their assessment of the Three Lions drawing with Denmark.

It led to current captain Harry Kane calling for former England players to remember their playing days and how difficult it can be to win a major tournament, with neither Shearer nor Lineker having done so during their international careers.

Shearerhas also been calling for the inclusion of Anthony Gordon, who impressed during the briefest of cameos in England’s drab draw with Slovenia on Tuesday.

Having been in the headlines, Shearer was actually asked if he wanted to become England manager during a chat with Lineker and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football Podcast.

Alan Shearer provides hilarious response when asked if he wants the England job

Shearer’s managerial career lasted only eight games of course when he couldn’t keep Newcastle in the Premier League back in 2009, albeit the problems went far beyond what he did on the touchline in such a limited time frame.

He has never got back into the mix and has instead focused on building a successful media career.

So, when asked if he wanted the Three Lions job at some point, his hilarious response is not exactly too surprising.

“No,” he said.

“To get absolutely hammered! You have millions and millions of people picking the right team.”

Alan Shearer has already tipped Eddie Howe to become England manager some day

Interestingly, Shearer has already suggested he could in fact see Newcastle boss Eddie Howe getting the job some day, albeit the Magpies boss has expressed no desire to leave.

Speaking on the Peter Crouch Podcast in March, Shearer said: “The obvious one last season was Eddie Howe, but you know how football works.

“He took Newcastle to fourth last year and I know they have struggled this year but everyone would have said him last year. There’s no doubt he will get a mention if and when the England job comes up.”
