Darwin Nunez shares what he and former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez are always talking about together

Liverpool now have some serious history with Uruguayan centre-forwards.

The Reds have recently become something of a haven for South American players, with four players from four different countries in the current squad.

Liverpool have had players from the continent before, of course. But over the years those have largely been from Brazil, with a sprinkling from Argentina.

One of the exceptions to that rule was Luis Suarez. The legendary Uruguayan scored 82 goals in just 133 appearances for the Reds.

Still going strong with Inter Miami, Suarez has began to pass the baton to Darwin Nunez for the Uruguay national team. And with their shared Liverpool connection, Nunez has now explained how he and the 37-year-old spend their time off the pitch.

Darwin Nunez reveals Luis Suarez conversations

Suarez has been helping Nunez a lot since his move to Liverpool in 2022. The older man is obviously a reference point in all of Uruguayan football.

But because of their shared position as well as the fact that Suarez knows what it takes to be a success at Anfield, they have become close.

Whatever the veteran has been saying to Liverpool’s No.9 has obviously been working. Nunez now has nine goals in his last six appearances for his country.

A goal at the Copa America this week was Nunez’s latest contribution and he looks ready to lead Marcelo Bielsa’s team deep into the competition.

Suarez is in the squad too in what is likely to be his final tournament as a national team player. And although he did not play against Panama on Monday, Nunez says the former Barcelona man is still vital to the group and to him in particular.

“With Luis, the truth is that we are always going to have a very nice, very healthy competition,” the 25-year-old says via Medio Tiempo.

“Whoever plays, the other has to be there to support him.

“I always try to get together with him, to talk about football things, about his past,” Nunez adds. “He is always there to give me advice and I take everything as positive and try after applying it.”

Darwin Nunez ready to lead Uruguay

Nunez is looking absolutely lethal for Uruguay as they aim for a first Copa America success since 2011, when Suarez – then of Liverpool – scored in the final.

Alexis Mac Allister and Argentina are still the favourites to win the tournament in the USA, but nobody should be discounting Bielsa and his team.

If they are to go all the way, then Nunez will have been a huge part of it. The Liverpool man looks unstoppable right now.

Hopefully time away with Suarez and his compatriots will be just the tonic for a difficult end to the season with the Reds.

Arne Slot is reportedly counting on Nunez to play a big part for him next season at Liverpool. If he can come into that full of confidence and buoyed by Suarez’s help and advice, it can only benefit the Reds.
