'Expecting...': Journalist shares update on Di'Shon Bernard's Sheffield Wednesday future ahead of July 1st

Sheffield Wednesday defender Di’Shon Bernard is out of contract this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Di’Shon Bernard, 23, last summer after the centre-back was released by Manchester United.

Bernard would go on to become a key player for the Owls during the 2023/24 campaign, featuring 32 times in the Championship as Sheffield Wednesday secured a 20th place finish.

Since the end of the season, Sheffield Wednesday have offered Bernard a new contract. But his presence in Copa America with Jamaica this summer has delayed his next step.

Danny Rohl is desperate for the Manchester United academy graduate to stay at Hillsborough beyond this summer.

Josh Windass is another key first-team player out of contract at the end of this month and set to become a free agent on July 1st.

Windass though has already been tipped to leave S6 this summer, with West Brom in talks over a possible summer swoop.

Latest on Di’Shon Bernard future at Sheffield Wednesday

Bernard has just played four games for Jamaica; two friendlies and two games in Copa America in USA.

After a 3-1 defeat vs Ecuador on Wednesday night, the Reggae Boys have been eliminated from the tournament.

Bernard started the game at centre-back but was brought off at the break with Jamaica trailing 2-0.

Since, journalist Alex Miller has revealed on X that Jamaica’s exit from Copa America will ‘accelerate’ a decision on Bernard’s future at Sheffield Wednesday.

Miller adds that ‘no firm decision has been made’ by Bernard as of yet.

One key factor behind Di’Shon Bernard future at Sheffield Wednesday

Bernard showed his class in the Championship last season; he’s an all round defender who can drive forward with the ball, pick out a pass, and provide aerial coverage as well.

At 23 years old he’s still got a lot of potential and he showed that in the Championship, so it’s clear to see why Sheffield Wednesday want to keep him, and why other teams are showing an interest.

And it seems as though the Owls have done all they can to entice him into signing a new deal, with a new contract for Rohl likely to play a big factor in Bernard potentially staying.

Windass said earlier in the summer that he and some of his teammates were waiting for Rohl’s future to be finalised before deciding on their own.

For Bernard, there’s a chance to be a key starter for Sheffield Wednesday next season, and to keep on progressing under the keen eye of Rohl.

With no decision yet to be made, a new deal for Bernard remains a possibility, albeit a seemingly slim on at this stage.
