Five Euro 2024 standouts Pep Guardiola should consider signing for Man City in the summer transfer window

Euro 2024 is in full swing with the conclusion of the group stage and several players have enjoyed a fantastic tournament so far.

With most of Europe’s top stars – practically everyone except Erling Haaland – at Euro 2024, the transfer market for the biggest clubs has got off to a slow start.

Manchester City are yet to make any signings in what looks likely to be a quiet summer but it could burst to life once the tournament has finished.

Some of the tournament’s best performers are sure to have piqued clubs’ interest and potentially earned themselves big moves.

Here are five Euros stars Pep Guardiola may like in his squad ahead of the new season.

City aren’t exactly short on defenders and are especially well-stocked at centre-back with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol all in the squad.

But with Guardiola shifting towards having his centre-backs in full-back positions there could be room for further reinforcements to the back-line, especially if Sergio Gomez departs.

One such target could be Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori, who has been one of the biggest breakthrough stars of Euro 2024.

The classy defender is coming off the back of a fine season in which he helped ill-fancied Bologna qualify for the Champions League.

Calafiori is capable of playing in the middle or at left-back, a versatility that will appeal to the Blues boss, and got eight goal contributions in Serie A last term.

With his contract running until 2027 and demand to be high after the tournament, the 22-year-old won’t be cheap for whoever signs him.

Fabian Ruiz – Spain

If there was one area City were weak in last season it was the middle of the park.

Though the Premier League was retained, City did take time to adjust after losing the influential Ilkay Gundogan.

Matheus Nunes offered little in his debut season and though Mateo Kovacic eventually contributed, you sense City could upgrade the midfield if they wanted.

Spain’s Fabian Ruiz has just had a strong season with PSG and is continuing his form in the tournament, helping Spain stand out as probably the best team in Germany so far.

He already has a strong partnership with Rodri, which would help him slip seamlessly into the City side.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – Georgia

City have long been touted with an interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the winger’s performances in Euro 2024 may tempt them to make speculation a reality.

The Napoli star has been far from Georgia’s only fantastic performer in their unexpected march to the knock-out stages but it’s clear he is of a different class.

Kvaratskhelia scored the crucial opener in the massive upset win over Portugal but what has been more impressive is his incredible work ethic and superb quality on the ball.

Time and again the 23-year-old has carried the ball up the pitch with dextrous footwork, avoiding challenge after challenge to relieve a weary defence, earn free-kicks and launch counter-attacks.

There would be a concern of Guardiola dulling Kvaratskhelia’s exciting impulses as he has with Jack Grealish but Jeremy Doku was allowed to bring his dribbling game to the Etihad so maybe he could, too.

It would be a statement addition but would take a whole lot of money to complete.

Nico Williams – Spain

Another winger who has lit up Euro 2024 is Nico Williams, with his lightning speed and thrilling skill leaving spectators spellbound.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has grabbed the headlines but Williams has been just as important to a deadly attack that looks set to go far in the tournament.

The 21-year-old is another forward who would suit City perfectly but it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere this summer.

Willimas signed a new contract with Athletic earlier this year and has made it clear he isn’t considering a move.

Nicolas Seiwald – Austia

If there’s one area City must absolutely strengthen this summer then it is defensive midfield.

The club simply can’t go expecting Rodri to take the load of a whole season on his shoulders once again, it’s asking for disaster when he eventually gets injured or burns out.

A capable and quality backup option is desperately required and one may have presented himself in the form of Nicolas Seiwald.

In a tournament of underdogs, Austria have surprised everyone by finishing above France and the Netherlands in Group D and doing so with aggressive, high-octane pressing football.

Nicolas Seiwald has been the unsung hero of Ralf Rangnick’s side, the glue that stitches everything together and protects the back-line when the rest go forward.

The 23-year-old RB Leipzig man is relentless in his pursuit to win the ball back and has the quality while in possession to move it up the field. He sounds like the perfect Rodri understudy.
