Premier League gem wanted by Sheffield Wednesday must take note of one Owls case study - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move for Manchester United forward Charlie McNeill.

Emerging reports on Thursday claimed that Sheffield Wednesday are in the race to sign Charlie McNeill at Manchester United this summer.

The 20-year-old striker is set to become a free agent at the end of June and he could yet become Sheffield Wednesday’s fourth summer signing.

Danny Rohl has already welcomed Ben Hamer and Max Lowe to S6 on free transfers this summer, bringing in Yan Valery as a permanent signing from French outfit Angers.

But the Owls boss now looks set to bolster his front line following the departure of loan man Ike Ugbo and the probable exit of Josh Windass as a free agent at the end of this month.

McNeill is thought to have suitors elsewhere in the Championship but Sheffield Wednesday are said to be firmly in the race for his signature.

And McNeill may not have to look far to see why he should choose a move to Hillsborough over anywhere else this summer.

The striker could even call upon one of his former Manchester United academy teammates for some advice, with Di’Shon Bernard having been in McNeill’s shoes just last summer, and opting to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Di’Shon Bernard at Sheffield Wednesday

Last summer, 23-year-old defender Bernard was let go by Manchester United without ever making a Premier League appearance for the club.

The Jamaican international was at something of a crossroads following a string of rather uneventful loan spells. But he’s more than found his footing in Sheffield.

Bernard featured 32 times in the Championship last season and was a key component behind the Owls’ eventual 20th place finish under Rohl.

He’s currently set to become a free agent at the end of June amid interest from the top-end of the Championship and from abroad too.

After just one season at Hillsborough, Bernard is now a key player for Jamaica, having just played in Copa America this summer, and is bound for a big move to a new club, if not a new contract in S6.

Can Charlie McNeill have the same success at Sheffield Wednesday

McNeill is in almost the exact same situation at Bernard was last summer, following several loan spells and likely an eagerness to leave United, and finally get his career going.

Sheffield Wednesday desperately need strikers and so there’ll likely be plenty of game time available for McNeill, and already some strong competition for him to go up against in the likes of Bailey Cadamarteri.

Not only that, but Rohl managed to drastically improve almost every player last season, though it was mainly those in attack.

Windass came back into the fold and showed his class after a slow start to the campaign. Cadamarteri improved greatly under Rohl’s watch. Michael Smith even showed his worth, and Ugbo went on to score seven goals in 18 games after scoring four in 20 for Cardiff City in the first half of the campaign.

So for McNeill there’s the Bernard case study, and then several others that could tempt him into linking forces with Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday this summer, and testing himself in the ever-popular Championship next time round.
