Sheffield Wednesday now have Ugbo alternative, he'd be perfect for Chansiri's transfer plan - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday now appear to have an alternative striker signing lined up.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is keen for last season’s loan hero Ike Ugbo to return this summer, on a permanent basis.

Ugbo, 25, scored seven goals in 18 Championship appearances on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Troyes last season.

Since, Troyes have been relegated to the French third tier. Ugbo now looks poised to leave but there’s thought to be widespread interest in Ugbo from rival clubs.

On Saturday, journalist Darren Witcoop revealed that Las Palmas and Guinea international striker Sory Kaba is on Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer radar.

The 28-year-old is seen as a cheaper alternative to Ugbo after previous reports in Spain that Kaba would be allowed to leave Las Palmas this summer, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Sory Kaba situation is perfect for Sheffield Wednesday and Dejphon Chansiri

Shortly before news that Kaba was wanted at Hillsborough, it was also revealed that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is ready to spend up to £1.5million on a new striker this summer.

Last summer, Kaba signed for Las Palmas is a deal reportedly worth around €2million (£1.69million), though after a tough initial season in Spain, Las Palmas may be ready to take a hit on Kaba.

The striker, who scored eight goals in 17 Championship appearances on loan at Cardiff City during the second half of the 2022/23 season, scored just one goals in 17 La Liga outings for Las Palmas last season.

Sheffield Wednesday need to be wary of one team in Sory Kaba race

Ugbo appears to have multiple suitors, whilst the race for Kaba appears to be less hectic.

But Witcoop also revealed that Watford are among the clubs eyeing Kaba, meaning that Sheffield Wednesday already face competition for the striker.

Whether there’s many more teams in the running remains to be seen, and whether or not Watford are ready to spend this summer remains likewise.

But we know now that Chansiri is ready to spend fairly well on a striker this summer and that Kaba might just about fall into their budget for a new attacker.

With a deal for Ugbo starting to look more and more unlikely as time goes by, Rohl and the Owls recruitment team might start paying more closer attention to Kaba.

He’s showed his Championship class in the past and boasts a similar skillset and physicality traits to Ugbo; he’s clinical inside the box and a real grafter out of possession.

If Sheffield Wednesday want to avoid a drawn-out search for a new striker, they should table an offer for Kaba sooner rather than later.
