Why Sandro Tonali's return to match fitness has just been slightly complicated at Newcastle - journalist

Newcastle United need a big season from Sandro Tonali.

Unable to play since October due to a betting ban, Tonali will be free from suspension in August and reportedly feels like he owes staff and supporters some big performances.

Indeed, the Italian isbelieved to want to repay those who stuck by him during an incredibly challenging period in his life, with the midfielder available from the Tottenham game at St James’ Park on August 31.

Not qualifying for Europe means the 24-year-old will not be able to play before then. Had Newcastle reached the Conference League, Eddie Howe’s side would have had to contest a play-off on Thursday August 29, two days after Tonali’s ban is officially up.

As a result, the club will reportedly have to plan accordingly and perhaps schedule extra behind-closed-doors friendlies, with the former Milan star unable to play in front of the public until his suspension is complete.

However, things have been ever-so-slightly complicated since.

Why Sando Tonali’s return to match fitness has been slightly complicated now

According to journalist Joel Bland on X (formerly Twitter), Tonali suffered a minor hamstring injury in training towards the end of last season.

It’s not thought to be particularly serious but could rule him out of pre-season games held behind closed doors.

Sandro Tonali is already impressing Newcastle staff again

After so long out, it’s hard to imagine Tonali being thrust straight into a game with Spurs at Premier League level right away, regardless of a potential injury.

It is, however, interesting to note the feeling towards the Italian behind the scenes at the club.

Insiders have reportedly been amazed by his performances in training and are very excited about his return to competitive action, having used the time on the sidelines to improve athletically ahead of the next chapter of his Newcastle career.
