During Jim Schlossnagle’s press conference, Chris Del Conte said the communication between him and the now-Texas coach began once Texas A&M season was over on Monday night. Reports have stated otherwise, specifically from Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball. He reported talks between the two began back in late April when the Aggies were hosting Georgia.
After all, a coaching hire needs more than 24 hours to develop, no matter the situation. There is more to the process than just hiring a guy, even with the type of relationship Del Conte and Schlossnagle have with each other.

“I really think this is something that has been brewing for weeks,” Rogers said via TexAgs Radio. “I think it’s a total coincidence that A&M happened to lose two series after all this started brewing. I really do, I don’t think it had anything to do with that.
“But I don’t think this was some snap, judgment decision where Coach Schlossnagle said ‘Oh, I’m going to Texas.’ Typically, with coaching searches, when a coach lands from finishing his season, and within 24 hours, he has a new job — there is literally zero way that that thing started that day.”
Rogers points out the “process” schools and coaches must go through during a coaching search — agents are involved while contracts must be drawn up and eventually reviewed. Doing all of this in 24 hours is nearly impossible in Rogers’ eyes, especially after a heartbreaking loss for Schlossnagle in the College World Series Finals against Tennessee.
Even if Del Conte drove down to College Station himself and brought Schlossnagle back to Austin with him, there was a longer process that played out.
“There is no way a coach is signing a contract at a cemetery in Snook,” Rogers said. “People aren’t stupid. So, it was a process.”
It’s something Texas A&M is going through themselves at the moment. Losing Schlossnagle was a tough moment for the program, one many are not too happy with. Watching him go to Texas, the school’s biggest rival, is going to sting for the rest of the time.
But athletic director Trev Alberts is out there looking for a replacement. Rogers later discussed some possible candidates and believes the hire could be made by the end of the weekend. A good sign for the Aggies as they look to continue momentum off their near national championship.
