Darwin Nunez equals record which has stood for nearly 100 years after what happened last night

Darwin Nunez has thus far blown hot and cold in his two seasons for Liverpool since his big-money move to Anfield in the summer of 2022.

The enigmatic striker became Liverpool‘s record signing at the time as Benfica received an initial £64m, with the deal set to reach up to £85m including bonuses if he satisfies certain performance-related add-ons.

While Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance, he hasn’t really justified the transfer fee or the hype he came with, with fans left scratching their heads at some of his misses in front of goal.

That said, Nunez has fared considerably better on the international stage with Uruguay, with Marcelo Bielsa getting the best out of him at the ongoing Copa America campaign.

With two goals in as many games, Nunez has spearheaded Uruguay’s pursuit of continental kingship as the record Copa America winners aim to win the competition for the 16th time in their history.

With his goal against Bolivia in the 5-0 rout, Nunez equalled the record of scoring in seven successive games for Uruguay as he finds himself on the brink of writing his name into the history books.

Uruguayan legend Héctor Scarone went on a similar run nearly 100 years ago as he scored in seven successive games between 1927 and 1928, but Nunez will look to get his name on the scoresheet against the USA next week and make the record his own.

Nunez going nowhere under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot

Arne Slot will look to imprint his philosophy at the club as he takes over the reigns from Jurgen Klopp.

Reports that Nunez could be on the move this summer after two lukewarm seasons at Anfield have been quashed, with Liverpool believed to be eager to get the best out of their record signing under their new manager.

The 24-year-old is scoring freely for Uruguay currently and Liverpool will hope his rich vein of form continues as the knockout stages of Copa America 2024 edge closer.
