The band’s manager has confirmed Crazy Town co-frontman Shifty Shellshock’s cause of death in a heartfelt statement.
With hit songs like Butterfly, the American rap rock group Crazy Town is looked back upon fondly as a treasured time capsule of late-1990s and early-2000s culture. The nostalgic music takes you back. Sadly, fans were painfully aware of co-frontman Shifty Shellshock‘s (real name Seth Binzer) struggles with addiction, as he appeared on two seasons of the reality TV series Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew in 2008, as well as its follow-up Sober House the following year. Even more tragically, his death on Monday, June 24th 2024, at 49 left many heartbroken, desperate to learn what happened.
Shifty Shellshock’s cause of death confirmed by Crazy Town manager
Days after Seth’s passing, Crazy Town manager Howie Hubberman took the time to enlighten fans as to the band member’s cause of death.
He suffered an accidental overdose in his home after taking a “combination of prescription drugs and street-purchased drugs,” Howie explained to People on Thursday, June 27th.
“Seth Binzer, after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town’s rapid success with Butterfly, never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions,” he elaborated with a heavy heart.

“We all tried,” he reflected, “but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here.”
Howie mourned Seth as foremostly a “friend”, one he admits he wishes could have “fixed” to be here and healthy. “Unfortunately, no one had the exact tools to do this,” he expressed, “myself included.”
People has noted a toxicology report remains pending, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner hasn’t officially revealed the cause of death. All the same, Howie has spoken out as a trusted source.
Fans suspected the cause of death to be related to addiction after Crazy Town co-frontman Bret Mazur said in his tribute: “Seth struggled with the challenges of maintaining sobriety throughout his life, a battle that he continuously fought privately and publicly… I wish with all my heart that his story could have ended differently…”
Fans continue to mourn a ‘unique voice’
Crazy Town’s music, which was a mixture of rock, metal, hip-hop and rap, means a whole lot to plenty of people, many of whom have been sure to say a few words about the man on social media.
“Shifty Shellshock’s music journey has come to an end, but his legacy lives on,” one wrote on X/Twitter. “His unique voice and talent brought a lot to the music world. Heartfelt sympathies to those who knew and loved him.”
“They had so much more to give the world,” another said of the band, “Listen to the second album Darkhorse and the song Drowning. I must have played that album a million times. R.I.P.”
“He was so awesome,” a fan praised, somebody adding: “Thank you for that great musical approach. Rest in peace.” Fly high, butterfly. You’ll be remembered and missed.
