Report: West Ham have proposed Flynn Downes trade for defender who impressed Jose Mourinho

West Ham United have now made a step forward in their efforts to continue their summer arrivals with two new players already through the door.

A new dawn has risen at the London Stadium with David Moyes having left his role in the dugout at the end of the season.

Julen Lopetegui has been announced as the new West Ham manager and he has already seen two new signings land in Wes Fodderingham and Luis Guilherme.

Despite it having been a busy start to the window in east London, the Hammers are looking to create more deals.

No European football will be on offer for the Irons next season with full focus from their players on league and domestic cup action.

But it seems as if there is one player in Flynn Downes who could potentially be on the move this summer and he has been proposed as a potential trade option in one possible deal.

West Ham open to trading Flynn Downes for defensive addition

Downes returned to the club this summer having spent the season away from the London Stadium on loan in the Championship with Southampton.

The 25-year-old midfielder played 37 times for the Saints as they secured promotion back to the Premier League in the play-off final with victory over Leeds United.

When asked whether a potential return would appeal to him during Southampton’s promotion party, Downes replied: “There’s not too much I can say as I’ll get too much stick but I’ll see what happens…”

Although the midfielder may have been keen to avoid the question, it seems as if he could be used by the Irons in a potential swap deal this summer.

According to The Telegraph, West Ham have held talks over potentially signing Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

The deal proposed by the Hammers would see Downes return to St Mary’s after spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan.

It is claimed Lopetegui has personally identified Walker-Peters as a player he’d like to see join West Ham this summer as he looks to build his squad.

Walker-Peters played a huge role in Southampton’s promotion campaign with manager Russell Martin hailing him as “brilliant“.

What Jose Mourinho said about Kyle Walker-Peters

Of course, Walker-Peters is a former Tottenham Hotspur player having come through the north Londoner’s academy.

His time at Spurs came to an end during Jose Mourinho‘s tenure at the club where the Portuguese manager had a lot of positive words to say about the versatile full-back.

“He’s a kid that everyone loves here and Daniel Levy has a special feeling for here”, Mourinho told the meida back in 2020.

“He came here so young, a kid who has been here for years and years. He’s playing well.”

It has even been suggested that Tottenham would consider a potential return to N17 for Walker-Peters this summer, as well.
