Marc Guehi now admits he wishes Gareth Southgate took a 5th Crystal Palace player to Euro 2024 with England

Gareth Southgate might’ve chosen four Crystal Palace players in his Euro 2024 squad, but it’s long been assumed that he should’ve named five.

Euro 2024 is now well underway as we look toward the beginning of the knockout stages this Saturday. For England, it’s been relatively disappointing to date despite topping group C.

However luckily for the Three Lions, winning the group has seen them drawn on the easier side of the bracket, with a round-of-16 game against Slovakia to be followed by a quarter-final against what looks likely to be Italy and then a semi-final against possibly Austria or the Netherlands.

Crystal Palace’s defender Marc Guehi has been the arguable star of the England team thus far, but he’s now commented and suggested a fifth player from Selhurst Park should be in the squad, and it’d have solved a huge issue.

Marc Guehi wishes Tyrick Mitchell had been called up by England

Guehi has been one of Southgate’s standout players through the tournament thus far, although the biggest problem position for England has been who is next to Guehi, in the left-back role.

Well, Guehi has now suggested that he’d have loved to have seen Palace’s own Tyrick Mitchell in the squad and in the team as he told the press while quoted by the BBC’s Alex Howell.

“I would have loved T [Tyrick] to be here. He’s had an amazing season, very consistent with his performances.

If he carries on, as we have seen with England players if he keeps going he will get his chance.”

The desire to have Mitchell in the squad is probably not only from Guehi but also Southgate after a group stage which saw left-back as the weakest position.

Tyrick Mitchell could’ve been a game-changer for England

For Southgate, the biggest mishap this summer will have been not selecting Mitchell, considering Kieran Trippier has been pretty poor at left-back.

But the main reason is because Luke Shaw’s injury status was a known risk and he’s brought him but Shaw is yet to feature, although he could feature against Slovakia.

Shaw’s injury woes aren’t just a one-off and it’s a recurrent issue for him which has seen him play just five games in 2024 for Manchester United.

Mitchell on the contrary has been ever present for Palace as the Eagles became one of the Premier League’s best sides in the final weeks of the season.
