The plan that Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl will likely have for loan signings this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have just completed their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday announced on Friday the permanent signing of Swedish midfielder Svante Ingelsson from Hansa Rostock, following their relegation from 2.Bundesliga.

Ingelsson becomes the fourth name to join the Owls on a permanent basis this summer, following the arrivals of Ben Hamer and Max Lowe on free transfers, and Yan Valery on a permanent deal from Angers.

Danny Rohl has so far overseen a very positive start to the pre-season with players reporting back for training and testing on Friday.

There remains little over five weeks until Sheffield Wednesday’s first home game of the 2024/25 Championship season, with a visit from Wayne Rooney and his Plymouth Argyle side.

There also remains a lot of work for Rohl and head of recruitment Kevin Beadell to do in the transfer market, with the Owls yet to make any loan moves.

Sheffield Wednesday plan for loan signings this summer

For teams in the Championship, and for Sheffield Wednesday most seasons, the loan market is a very important one.

The Owls’ loan signings in January arguably kept them in the Championship last season, with James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo all joining and all playing pivotal roles in the club’s 20th place finish.

Once again, the club will surely utilise loan signings. But that will no doubt come later in the summer when Premier League clubs have had the chance to finalise their own summer transfer plans.

We saw that last summer when Sheffield Wednesday brought in John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick on loan on deadline day.

Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer plans under Danny Rohl

With loan signings expected later in the summer transfer window, which closes for business on August 30th at 11pm, Sheffield Wednesday may pursue some more permanent signings in the meantime.

Also, July 1st is when a lot of players in the UK and Europe officially become free agents, so Sheffield Wednesday may have their eyes on a lot of players and a lot of potential free agents from next week onwards.

Several names may also need replacing, such as Josh Windass and Di’Shon Bernard who, as of now, are set to become free agents when their Sheffield Wednesday deals expire on June 30th.

The summer transfer window so far has shown Sheffield Wednesday fans that owner Dejphon Chansiri does have ambition for the future, and that he is ready to give Rohl the tools needed for both the club and himself to prevail in the near future.
