West Ham could sign the next Fredy Guarin for just £20m amid reports Hammers are considering bid - opinion

West Ham United have already been quite busy in the summer transfer window and they’re unlikely to stop any time soon.

The Hammers have already made two signings, landing winger Luis Gulherme from Palmeiras and goalkeeper Wes Foderingham on a free transfer.

West Ham are likely to bring in more players, with several positions in need of strengthening, such as defence and attack.

There’s a good chance the Hammers could bring in some more midfielders too, amid reports suggesting Flynn Downes is pursuing a move away.

West Ham, who missed out on Aleix Garcia to Bayer Leverkusen, are said to have been eyeing Youssouf Fofana and Ismael Kone.

Now, a report has been doing the rounds claiming the Hammers are once again targeting the Americas for a potential new target.

West Ham set sights on Inter Miami star Diego Gomez

According to GiveMeSport, West Ham have enquired about Inter Milan and Paraguay gem Diego Gomez, and are considering a move for him.

Although Brighton are said to be frontrunners for the 21-year-old’s services, the Seagulls’ initial bid has apparently fallen short of the MLS club’s valuation.

Inter Miami are reportedly seeking around £20million for Gomez, so if West Ham want to swoop in and sign a top talent for a modest fee, now’s the chance.

Who is West Ham target Diego Gomez?

Gomez through the ranks at Paraguayan outfit Libertad, and joined Inter Miami for a reported £2million fee last summer.

He has gone from strength to strength in Florida, registering 25 appearances, four goals and three assists to date.

Gomez, who counts Lionel Messi among his club teammates, has also won seven caps for Paraguay’s senior side.

In addition, he captained his nation’s Under-23s to Olympic qualification earlier this year, registering five goals in the process.

Speaking to the Miami Herald in April, Inter manager Tata Martino said: “The performance of Gomez is a highlight of this team, all of his work in winning balls, he is understanding the game more and more.

“He has the physical and skills, and I do think he is a player who has already been noticed in Europe and surely will continue to.”

Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig has described Gomez as a “combative” and “high-quality” box-to-box midfielder with a “superb future ahead“.

Kulig also compared Gomez to Porto, Inter Milan and Colombia icon Fredy Guarin.

Back in In 2013, Andrea Stramaccioni – Guarin’s manager at Inter at the time – sung his praises, as per Football Italia.

Stramaccioni described him as “an extraordinary player who combines physicality with technique in an incredible way. He is also an important element in the locker room.”

Guarin also won the 2011 Europa League, three Portuguese titles, three Portuguese cups and a host of other trophies while at Porto, as well as 57 caps for Colombia.

To be compared to such a player is a badge of honour, and Gomez certainly looks like he has the tools required to become like Guarin.

Gomez seems to tick a lot of boxes for West Ham, so there will hopefully be some progress on this front in the coming weeks.
