Standout USC women’s basketball player Juju Watkins continues to grab plenty of national attention during and after her first season in cardinal and gold. Today, Watkins was named one of four nominees for the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” ESPY Award.

Watkins is up against plenty of star power for the award. The other three finalists include LSU gymnast Haleigh Bryant, Houston Texans’ quarterback C.J. Stroud and San Antonio Spurs’ center Victor Wembanyama.

Watkins was a star for the USC women’s basketball team this past season. After joining the Trojans as the No. 1 recruit in her class, Watkins led the Trojans with 34.6 minutes, 27.1 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She finished second on the team with 1.6 blocks per game and shot 40.1% from the floor, 31.9% from three-point range and 85.2% from the free-throw line.

Watkins was front and center last week at Dodger Stadium when she threw out the first pitch in a custom City Connect jersey.

She’s not the only USC Trojan up for an ESPY. Incoming track and field athlete Ezra Frech is one of four nominees for “Best Athlete With a Disability.” Frech is a Paralypian and the first above-the-knee amputee to commit to a Division 1 track and field program for able-bodied athletes. Last summer, he set the world record for the T63 high jump.

Fans are able to vote for their choices and the fan vote helps decide the winners. The ESPYs will air July 11 at 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
