5 boaters rescued after sailboat capsizes near Ellis Island, cops say

Five boaters were rescued near Ellis Island Friday afternoon when a sailboat they were in capsized, officials with the New York Police Department said.

At around 3:30 p.m. Friday the NYPD Harbor unit was dispatched for a call that a sailboat had capsized with five people on board, authorities said.

The NYPD boat pulled one person from the water while a nearby civilian boat rescued the other four people in the water, the NYPD said Friday night.

All five people were taken to Liberty Landing at Liberty State Park in Jersey City and were in stable condition Friday night, according to the NYPD.

Authorities did not share details on how the sailboat capsized.
