Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.
The Argentina international is one of Spurs’ best players. He has been excellent for them over the years, and his performances on the international stage have been magnificent as well.
When you’re performing as well as Romero has been, interest from big clubs is only natural. So, it’s not really a shock to hear that Real Madrid are looking at him.
However, Tottenham have absolutely no interest in letting Romero leave the club this summer.
What it would take for Real Madrid to sign Tottenham’s Cristian Romero
Tottenham signed Romero in the summer of 2021 initially on a loan deal but that was made permanent in the following summer.
The Argentine instantly became a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His aggressive style of defending is adored by Spurs supporters.
Yes, Romero has cost Tottenham on a few occasions due to his recklessness, but he has been much better since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival.
After a fine season at Spurs, Romero has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.
TBR Football exclusively revealed earlier in June that Tottenham have downplayed any suggestion that they would sell him in this window.
Now, Ben Jacobs has shared what he knows about the story.
The journalist has confirmed that Tottenham have no interest in selling Romero, but if they did, they would demand an ‘insane, astronomical’ fee for their star centre-back.
It may even have to be a world record figure for a defender – in excess of £80 million.
Jacobs said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast: “I give full respect to anyone saying Real Madrid want to sign Romero, it’s just not my understanding.
“Tottenham don’t want to lose Romero either and that’s the more important point. So, barring some insane astronomical bid, there’s very little chance that he’s going to go anywhere.
“And remember, he joined in 2021 for just over £40 million, so an astronomical bid would be up there with what Everton are valuing Jarrad Branthwaite, with what Harry Maguire went to Manchester United for from Leicester, which is £80 million.
“It would pretty much be a British transfer record for a defender if Tottenham were even to consider it. And even then, they might say no. So, I’m not actually aware that Real Madrid are planning anything.”
What Tottenham have to do with Romero ASAP
Tottenham shouldn’t be concerned about Romero right now.
Even if Real Madrid are interested in him, Spurs are in a strong position in potential transfer negotiations because the Argentine still has three years left on his contract.
However, before that number comes down to two, Tottenham should do everything they possibly can to extend Romero’s deal.
Yes, the defender loves it at Spurs and gets the respect he deserves from the fans, but he would want to add to his World Cup medal at some point.
If Tottenham don’t end their trophy drought in the next 12 months and Real Madrid are still lurking, there’s every chance Romero would consider a move.
To avoid that, Daniel Levy needs to tie him down to a deal that lasts longer than tha current one, which expires in 2027.
