Derby County must go all out for striker target after missing out on Premier League free agent - opinion

Derby County look set to miss out on attacking transfer target to Championship rivals.

Paul Warne has looked to crack on with his transfer dealings over the past few days, with striker Jerry Yates set to reunite with the former Rotherham United boss in a loan deal.

The signing of Ben Osborn following his contract expiring at recently relegated Sheffield United has also been confirmed, with the former Nottingham Forest midfielder being Warne’s first signing of the summer ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season.

Derby County have also been scouring the markets abroad as they showed interest in Eredivisie talent Kenzo Goudmijn as midfield options appear on the weaker side following the departure of Korey Smith and Conor Hourihane.

However, one position where they have been unable to tie down a signing is a wide-man, which leaves Warne with the need to go back to the drawing board for options.

Derby County must reignite Josh Windass pursuit as Jamal Lowe nears Sheffield Wednesday

Derby County target Jamal Lowe has reportedly had a medical with Sheffield Wednesday ahead of a move to South Yorkshire, per Sheffield Wednesday News.

As a result, Warne should raid Sheffield Wednesday for Josh Windass, who is set to be released this summer.

The former Rangers attacker has held talks with Championship rivals West Brom, however Warne could tempt the 30-year-old to play a star role in Derby County’s attack.

Options are limited in Derby County when looking for a Championship experienced attacker, something that Windass would provide.

Why Josh Windass would transform Derby County attack

Windass has suffered many injury problems over the last couple years during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, but when fit, he is one of the Championship’s leading talents.

The 30-year-old could arguably offer more to Derby County than Lowe ever could have, which will have been helped by his incredible finish to the 2023/24 Championship season, which saw him score in three consecutive games to keep up the Owls.

Windass would arrive at Pride Park with expectations of being one of the key goal threats in their starting line-up, something that has been the case across his time at Wednesday and Rangers.

His Championship record also speaks volumes for the quality he provides, even when his side aren’t quite performing at their peak.

He could work brilliantly across the frontline and even get the best out of incoming loan striker Yates, something that Jamal Lowe was unable to do in the 2023/24 season.

Championship experience, alongside the ability to perform in big matches will be big selling points for Derby County going all in for Windass.

The Rams should undoubtedly fight head to head with West Brom to attain his services.
