Tottenham Hotspur still have chance to sign £35m wonderkid as Brentford deal collapses

Tottenham Hotspur may still have the chance to sign an English wonderkid this summer as Ange Postecoglou’s looks to bolster his squad.

June 30th has suddenly become almost like a new transfer deadline day.

Premier League clubs are busy trying to wheel and deal in order to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Tottenham Hotspur aren’t in any kind of trouble in that regard and are left watching chaos unfold across the Premier League.

Players are expected to come and go up and down the country today and Tottenham may have actually received a boost.

Tottenham Hotspur still have Archie Gray chance

Tottenham have been focusing on signing young players in recent times.

Since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival last summer, Tottenham have struck deals for the likes of Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz, Luka Vuskovic and Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham may continue to go down that route and still have hope of signing one target this summer.

Brentford have been pushing to sign Leeds United talent Archie Gray and were thought to have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ on Saturday.

This came as the Daily Mail suggested that Tottenham had been pushing to sign Gray harder than other Premier League clubs.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth suggested that Brentford were trying to push through a deal quickly because Tottenham were still in the mix.

Well, Brentford are now hitting problems in their £35million pursuit.

Nizaar Kinsella notes that Leeds have now rejected Brentford’s bid as a payment structure could not be reached.

Smyth reiterates that Tottenham are still keen on Gray and Brentford’s inability to get a deal done may well tempt Spurs into a deal.

Gray fits what Tottenham want

Tottenham are surely monitoring the situation closely and there seems to be a real window of opportunity here.

Gray is a top young talent at just 18 and has already racked up more than 50 first-team outings for Leeds.

The England Under-21 international is a midfielder by trade but has shown the ability to play as a right back too.

Gray could certainly fit the mould as an inverted right back in Postecoglou’s approach whilst offering depth in midfield.

Tottenham also have decent links to Leeds having sent Joe Rodon and Died Spence on loan to Elland Road last summer.

Brentford may be frantically scrambling to resurrect a deal but we would love to see Tottenham swoop in and make a move to pip them to Gray.
