'They'll sort it out': Bannan admits he's 'confident' one 'big player' will sign new Sheffield Wednesday deal

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a brilliant summer so far.

After avoiding relegation, Sheffield Wednesday tied Danny Rohl, Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer down to new contracts.

They have since signed Ben Hamer, Yan Valery, Max Lowe and Svante Ingelsson, with Jamal Lowe also set to sign on a free transfer.

While the Owls seem to be doing a brilliant job at strengthening their squad, they also face the challenge of keeping hold of some of their out-of-contract players too.

Wednesday remain in talks with Josh Windass, Dominic Iorfa and Di’Shon Bernard, with little update given on the latter pair.

However, Windass’ contract situation seems to have dragged on so far, having initially being expected to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Recent weeks saw reports emerge claiming that the midfielder had failed to come to an agreement with the Yorkshire outfit and was set to leave the club on a free transfer.

However, it now appears a deal is back on and ‘good progress’ is being made in negotiations.

Bannan says it is ‘important’ to keep hold of Josh Windass

It’s unclear when the saga will come to an end and whether it will be positive news at the end of it, but Bannan seems to think so.

Speaking to The Star at Owls in the Park, the captain said: “It is important.

“He’s a big player and you’d have to spend a bit of money to get a player in of his calibre. I’ve always been confident that he’ll sign here, me being his best mate. I know what he’s like and I kind of know what’s going on (with regard to negotiations), but I’ve always said Josh will stay here.

“He’s idolised here, maybe with some people he’s one that they love to hate! But the fans love him, he loves Sheffield. I’m hoping as a player and as a mate that he signs. You don’t always really know what’s going on in the background but hopefully for the club, for Josh and for me, they’ll sort it out. I’d love to play with him next season.”

Sheffield Wednesday need to get a deal done

Bannan surely wouldn’t speak so positively about Windass’ situation if he didn’t know the two parties were close to agreeing a deal.

While it is unclear what the hold-up is, it will be a huge relief to everyone if he eventually extends his stay at Hillsborough.

Rohl already has a very limited number of midfielders in his ranks and while he is eager to bring in his own players, Windass is very important to this squad and will undoubtedly be a key figure next term too.
