'I spoke to him': Cameron Dawson admits he 'can't wait' to reunite with former Sheffield Wednesday 'roomie'

Cameron Dawson’s exit from Sheffield Wednesday was confirmed this week.

The goalkeeper joined Sheffield Wednesday back in 2010 and has now left to join Rotherham United on a free transfer.

Dawson played a key role in the Owls’ promotion back to the Championship, picking up the highest percentage of clean sheets than any other ‘keeper with more than one appearance(56%).

The 28-year-old managed 18 appearances in the second tier, before losing his place to James Beadle in the second half of the campaign.

Despite dropping down the pecking order, Dawson was one of a number of players to be offered new contracts at Hillsborough this summer.

However, he opted to leave the club in search of regular game-time and made the short trip to Rotherham.

After joining the likes of Will Vaulks, Lee Gregory and Reece James to leave the club, he will now reunite with the latter at the New York Stadium.

James also played a key role in the Owls’ promotion before losing his place in the team this season, making only five appearances under Danny Rohl.

The defender was then released at the end of the season and confirmed he was joining The Millers last month.

James will surely be delighted about the news of Dawson’s arrival, while the shot-stopper has admitted he ‘can’t wait’ to reunite with his former teammate.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Dawson said: “Yeah, brilliant. Can’t wait to see Reece again. I spoke to him a lot over the summer. He was my roomie for large parts at Sheffield Wednesday, so I’m really close with Reece. He’s obviously a great fella, you know him, rather brilliant fella. A really committed player. Yeah, looking forward to working with him again.”

Summer exits are the start of something exciting at Sheffield Wednesday

Dawson and James leaving the club is certainly bittersweet, given the success that they helped bring to the club in the 2022/23 season.

However, it marks the start of a new era under Rohl. The German is eager to freshen up the squad and bring in players of a much higher quality.

Wednesday were still relying on a number of players who featured in League One, so it came as no surprise that they ended up battling relegation.

The Yorkshire outfit need to upgrade these departing players, but their contributions certainly won’t be forgotten.
