Why 'top' Newcastle player has now made a U-turn on his future - journalist

It has been a crazy few hours for Newcastle United fans.

With the deadline for the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) accountancy period fast-approaching, there has been an awful lot of Newcastle-related news of late.

Alexander Isak was frequently being linked with a move to Chelsea, though was ultimately deemed too expensive by the Blues.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, was being touted for a shock move to Liverpool.

Still, it now looks as if those will stay, while the release clause in Bruno Guimaraes’ contract is said to have expired.

However, not everyone has been safe from a sale.

Yankuba Minteh had already accepted he needed to leave and now seems destined to join Brighton.

It seems he will be joined by another, too.

Elliot Anderson was hailed as “top” by Gordon and had been talked up by Eddie Howe but seems set to depart.

Why Elliot Anderson made a U-turn on his Newcastle future

After reports emerged suggesting Anderson had been offered to Wolves as part of a move to bring Max Kilman to St James’ Park, Craig Hope suggested the 21-year-old actually wanted to stay on Tyneside.

In fact, it was even claimed that the academy graduate was after a new contract.

According to Keith Downie on X (formerly Twitter), however, the situation has changed.

A move to Nottingham Forest now beckons and the fact Anderson knows they are now an established Premier League club – as well as the offer of some attractive personal terms – has helped facilitate the move.

Eddie Howe did not get what he wanted at Newcastle

Selling academy graduates represents ‘pure profit’ on a club’s balance sheet, so obviously helps on the PSR front.

However, Howe was not thought to have been keen on selling Anderson at all – even despite that obvious benefit.

The fact Newcastle have reluctantly agreed to sell Anderson is unlikely to go down too well, albeit the PSR situation looks to have forced their hand.

We can moan about the rules all we like but they still need to be followed.

Sadly, hard decisions have to be taken.
