Tottenham now in advanced negotiations to sign £35m ‘wonderkid’ as confidence over deal grows

Tottenham Hotspur are ramping up their attempts to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad ahead of pre-season.

A host of Spurs players are expected to begin filtering back to the training ground this weekend ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ange Postecoglou is yet to land any new signings barring the extension of Timo Werner’s loan by a further year.

The Aussie boss has stated his desire to bring in new players as early as possible this summer and if all goes according to plan, Tottenham could land their first permanent signing of the summer soon.

Tottenham advancing with deal to sign Archie Gray

After Archie Gray rejected a move to Brentford over the weekend, Tottenham have pounced in an attempt to land a longstanding target.

The 18-year-old looked set to make a £35 million switch to the Gtech Community Stadium after his medical was booked in.

But after The Athletic broke the news on Sunday that Gray is leaning towards a switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it would appear that Spurs are in advanced talks to secure the signing.

Fabrizio Romano took to X on Monday morning and shared the latest on Gray’s proposed move to north London.

He wrote: “Understand Tottenham are advancing on Archie Gray deal, negotiations progressing.

“Spurs are optimistic on personal terms after positive talks with player’s camp, player open to the move. Tottenham hope to reach total agreement and book medical soon.”

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has also claimed there is ‘growing confidence’ on Tottenham’s side that a deal for Gray will be struck.

Gray solves two issues for Ange Postecoglou

With Spurs in the market for a new full-back and central midfielder, Gray seems like an astute signing from the club.

The Leeds academy product, who was previously lauded as a ‘wonderkid’, is naturally a midfielder but featured regularly at right-back under Daniel Farke last season.

Gray racked up 52 appearances in all competitions and his versatility will cover two problem areas for Spurs.

Emerson Royal looks likely to depart this summer and should Gray complete a move to Hotspur Way, he would provide extra quality at right-back.

Tottenham are also searching for reinforcements in midfield and Gray has shown his ability in the middle of the park, particularly during a 3-2 FA Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge back in February.
