Report: Wolves in four-way battle for £87k-a-week star Jurgen Klopp called 'a really good footballer'

Wolves are facing competition from three other clubs for a player they have just been linked with.

It has been a productive summer so far at Molineux, with Gary O’Neil and Matt Hobbs seeking to prepare the squad for 2024/25 in the best way possible.

O’Neil wants a bigger squad for next season, after injuries hit hard in 2023/24.

The manager was forced to turn to players who just weren’t experienced enough, and Wolves’ loss of momentum saw them eventually finish 14th in the Premier League table.

Apparently, Wolves are currently showing interest in Arthur Melo from Juventus.

But the club will not have a straight run at the Brazilian should they wish to make a move.

It was claimed over the weekend that Wolves had submitted an enquiry over Arthur, who is not in the plans of Juventus for next season.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Fiorentina and they had an option to purchase the South American.

But they were not willing to trigger their option. Arthur – who is reported to be on around £87,000 per week – will now return to Juve, but the likelihood is that he will soon leave as he is not in their plans.

Tuttosport quote the player’s agent Federico Pastorello as saying: “We know that he is not part of Juve’s plans, we are working to find the best solution.”

And seemingly, he is not short of potential suitors at the moment.

Tuttsport have reported that Wolves are in the mix to sign the former Liverpool loanee, but also in the race are Everton and Newcastle United. And then, there is further interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

It would be a gamble

It will be very interesting to see if Wolves make a move to sign Arthur this summer, with the player having found form again last season at Fiorentina.

He has not had a good spell at Juventus since joining them back in 2020 when Miralem Pjanic moved in the opposite direction to Barcelona.

English football fans may remember that he had a spell with Liverpool in 2022/23. Jurgen Klopp branded him ‘a really good footballer’ shortly after he signed, but he endured a torrid time on Merseyside.

He struggled with physical condition problems, and only made one cameo appearance totalling 13 minutes all season.

That past stint in England would potentially make him a bit of a risk for Wolves, who are not overly desperate for another midfielder right now, although if Joe Hodge heads out on loan again maybe O’Neil will fancy a fifth option.

That said, Arthur did get back on track last term, making 48 appearances in total.
