Report: Newcastle genuinely considered selling 'game-changer' hours before he played a huge game

Newcastle United were being forced into some key decisions across the course of the weekend.

With Newcastle needing to raise funds to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), there were all manner of reports coming out of St James’ Park.

Eventually, Yankuba Minteh left for Brighton and Elliot Anderson joined Nottingham Forest.

Minteh isbelieved to have been a reluctant sale, while Eddie Howe did not want to lose Anderson.

Still, if it meant keeping star players and avoiding a ten-point penalty too, then it may be a necessary evil.

Indeed, Howe was reportedly telling PIF not to sell Alexander Isak amid interest from Chelsea, while the club are also thought to have held talks with Liverpool about selling Anthony Gordon out of sheer desperation to comply with the financial rules.

Now, more insight into another potential exit has emerged.

Kieran Trippier, hailed as a “game changer” by Alan Shearer, may have also been sold.

Newcastle genuinely considered selling Kieran Trippier just hours before he played for England at Euro 2024

According to The Athletic, transfer meetings were held on Sunday and a third exit was under discussion.

Trippier is believed to have been that player and the club considered letting him leave just hours before he played for England at Euro 2024 during their dramatic win over Slovakia.

One club does not want to sign Kieran Trippier this summer

It does appear as if Newcastle have been trying to move Trippier on for a while, despite his importance to the cause since signing.

Though he’s believed to want to stay and Howe wishes to keep him, Newcastle are said to have offered Trippier to AC Milan, though they would instead prefer to focus on signing Tottenham’s Emerson Royal.

Quite where this leaves Trippier now remains to be seen.
