Report: What Darren Eales may now do after Newcastle scramble to avoid PSR disaster

Newcastle United appear to have avoided a profit and sustainability nightmare, but only just.

June 30th was viewed as a key date for Newcastle United, with the Magpies under pressure to sell to stay within the limits of PSR. It turns out they were under a lot of pressure, and it led to rumours that they might have to do something drastic.

Chelsea looked to take advantage of Newcastle’s situation by making a move for Alexander Isak, while there was even a suggestion that Anthony Gordon could be sent to Liverpool. Fortunately that did not happen, but there are now reportedly fears that his head has been turned by the lure of a return to Merseyside.

It was a messy final 48 hours of June, but it ended with Eddie Howe waving goodbye to two incredibly talented youngsters. Yankuba Minteh went to Brighton, having never kicked a ball for Newcastle. Elliot Anderson also departed, with the academy product being shipped off to Nottingham Forest.

Combine that with Dan Ashworth finally heading to Manchester United, and it looks like Newcastle may have done enough to avoid what could have been a 10-point deduction.

Darren Eales may address Newcastle United problem

That is great news, but how Newcastle got there has raised more questions than answers. It was a really chaotic end to the month for the Magpies, and one that has massively unsettled the fanbase.

The club need to provide answers, and there is a chance they could do exactly that.

According to iNews, there is a chance that Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales may address how the club handled their PSR situation in the near future.

Newcastle fans deserve explanation after PSR scramble

It is vital that Eales does come out and speak to the fans and explain what has gone on.

There needs to be clear communication between the hierarchy and the fanbase, and it should not be up to Eddie Howe to answer questions on it when he eventually speaks to the media later in the summer.

Had he not left, it would have been Ashworth’s responsibility, but now it is Eales who must face the music.

It is great to see him come out and speak to fans as they queue up to buy the new Adidas kit on release day, but it is even more important that he addresses what has been going on behind the scenes ahead of June 30th.

Of course, fans will never get a proper answer and a clear picture of what happened. But there needs to be a line of communication, as it all seemed very desperate as the PSR deadline approached.

PSR was not a new problem for Newcastle, yet it created a situation where the club simply had to bring in almost £70million in player sales on the final day of June. Why did it go so close to the wire despite this being a well documented issue?

That is one of the questions that fans deserve an answer to, and it will be interesting to see what Eales has to say – if he says anything at all.
