‘Imbalance’: Gary Neville tells Gareth Southgate what he must do with Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Switzerland

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly be frustrated with his Euro 2024 venture so far.

The 25-year-old featured heavily in the opening group match against Serbia, playing 69 minutes in the 1-0 victory.

But his minutes on the pitch have declined since then, with Alexander-Arnold playing 54 minutes and six minutes against Denmark and Slovenia respectively.

The Liverpool star was then left on the bench for the round of 16 meeting with Slovakia, alongside Reds teammate Joe Gomez.

The latter is yet to feature at Euro 2024, with his latest snub alongside Alexander-Arnold angering Liverpool fans.

Gary Neville makes Trent Alexander-Arnold claim at Euro 2024

Southgate has opted to play Alexander-Arnold in midfield as opposed to right-back, an experiment which Chris Sutton believes hasn’t worked.

His fellow pundit Gary Neville now wants to see the player revert back to his familiar role on the pitch, with England facing Switzerland next in Germany.

“We thought there would be more changes and greater interference, but Gareth’s not going to do that now,” Neville told Sky Sports, calling for Alexander-Arnold to start at right-back.

“I think it does need some type of change, but Gareth – in the first four games – has made as limited changes as he could possibly do.

“He will be forced into one with [Marc] Guehi being suspended but apart from that, he will go in with the players as he sees it and try and almost play them into form through consistency, and the fact they’re working together more and there’s resilience building in them.

“But it just feels like there is a different dynamic. You talk about imbalance, that imbalance will remain if we continue to pick the same players. There is a rebalance and reset needed, but I’m not sure we’re going to get it.”

What will Gareth Southgate do with the Liverpool duo?

England have a long list of talented players in every position, with Alexander-Arnold certainly doing well to have landed a starting spot in midfield early on.

But Southgate has moved away from his experiment, instead opting for the likes of Conor Gallagher and Kobbie Mainoo.

The Chelsea man has also come in and out of the team, with the Manchester United youngster perhaps landing the spot for future matches after his displays.

Gomez meanwhile can count himself very unlucky not to have appeared at Euro 2024, having shone at left-back for Liverpool last season.

He will be frustrated given that England have struggled with that position in recent times due to injuries, with Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier currently occupying the role.

Having narrowly beaten Slovakia 2-1 in extra-time, England now take on the Swiss in the quarter-finals at the major competition.
