Ben Foster has said something about Kieran Trippier at Euro 2024 which is completely wrong - opinion

Former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster has shared a rather astonishing view of Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier following England’s narrow victory against Slovakia.

Speaking on his YouTube channel – The Cycling GK Foster discussed England’s narrow victory over Slovakia at Euro 2024.

Much has been said regarding the lack of balance in Gareth Southgate’s side, with Trippier playing out of position at left back causing some of the issues.

Trippier has been thrust into the left-back spot due to Luke Shaw’s lack of fitness, after recently returning from injury and is yet to feature for the Three Lions in Germany this summer.

Although Newcastle’s right-back has been unable to play his natural game on the opposite side of the pitch for England, Foster shared a surprising view. He said: “I think that Kieran Trippier is not necessarily an out-and-out attacking full-back anyway. He is not the guy that’s going to get all the way up and down and get balls into the box.”

Foster’s view on Trippier will come as a shock to Newcastle supporters who watch him every week, with the right-back seen as one of their most creative players.

In fact, Trippier has topped Newcastle’s assist charts in the last two seasons and is a constant threat on the right side.

Foster’s suggestion that Trippier doesn’t necessarily put balls into the box is flawed. The defender ranked fourth in the Premier League for chances created during the 2022/23 campaign. Trippier is also a regular set-piece taker for club and country, often aiming to pick out a teammate in the box.

Trippier was vital again for Newcastle last season and only created two fewer chances than Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

The Toon defender’s performances allowed Miguel Almiron to shine on the right wing for Newcastle in 2022/23, the pair struck up a superb relationship and led to the Paraguyan’s most impactful season in a Newcastle shirt with 15 goal contributions in all competitions.

Eddie Howe has regularly expressed Trippier’s importance to Newcastle

Howe has consistently stressed Trippier’s importance to Newcastle on and off the pitch. Indeed, the Newcastle manager has previously stated the defender was ‘fundamental’ to the side, as reported in the Metro.

Trippier is seen by many Newcastle supporters as a ‘game changer,’ he was the first player post-takeover to make the move to Tyneside which also had a big influence on Bruno Guimaraes’ move to the club. The view is that if the defender didn’t sign for the Magpies, other key players would not have followed.

Howe has waxed lyrical about Trippier’s professionalism since he arrived at the club and has since set very high standards at St James’ Park.

Despite a rumoured move to Bayern Munich in January, Trippier remains one of Newcastle’s key players ahead of the new season.
