Journalist: Rangers deal for Euro 2024 ‘monster’ is ‘in the post’ after stunning season

Philippe Clement has sounded the Rangers transfer horn as the club hunt top level experience.

The Belgian manager is clear that whilst he’s excited about the host of young talents Rangers have attracted this summer, wise old heads are also a must this window.

And now without good reason.

Several of the club’s most experienced players walked out the door at the end of their contracts and there are some big gaps in the squad to fill.

But the Gers are setting about plugging them as a leading Scottish football journalist claims a deal for one Euro 2024 ‘monster’ is ‘in the post’.

McLean Rangers deal is ‘in the post’

Kenny McLean has never been shy in nailing his Rangers colours to the mast.

As none of us ever are.

The Scotland international is a dyed-in-the-wool bluenose and has been open about relishing the opportunity to represent the club on the biggest stage.

At 32-year-old the Norwich City star might be getting on in dog years but he’s still proving hugely effective at the heart of the Carrow Road midfield.

Named the club’s Player of the Year after a stunning season in the English Championship, there was no-one better in the English second flight when it came to winning ground duels last season.

Having just been part of the Scotland squad who collapsed at Euro 2024, Rangers have been extensively linked with a move.

Now, Jonny McFarlane of the Rangers Review is claiming that a deal to bring the ex-Aberdeen midfielder to Ibrox IS on with the move already some way down the line.

“All the soundings I’m hearing are that this is a deal that’s in the post, that things are moving along nicely, that Kenny McLean is someone we’ll expect to see at Ibrox,” McFarlane told the platform’s Morning Briefing for 1st July.

“I’m quite surprised at that because he’s the captain of Norwich, he was the player of the year last year, I’ve got a couple pals who are big Norwich supporters, they rave about him.

“You know his numbers in the Championship have been doing the rounds, he was a monster in that league in terms of winning balls for them.”

That means that despite banking around £40m from the sale of Archie Gray, Leeds United aren’t expected to resurrect last summer’s interest in McLean.

Ibrox transfer focus switches to experience

Kenny McLean would certainly go some way to replacing the influence of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack in the middle of the park for Rangers.

Having played over 50 games for Norwich City last season, McLean still has more than enough in the tank to come up here and be an effective player for the club.

But the midfielder’s signing has got to be the start.

Rangers need their starting XI bulked out with several areas of the squad still lacking the required quality which will see us go on to be champions next season.

Whilst the additions of Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Liam Kelly are welcome, you get the feeling there’s more to come in the weeks ahead.
