The electric truck market has been heating up with the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and Ford F-150 Lightning all starting to enter the market. But with Ford outright stating that the electric F-150 doesn’t intend to compete with the Hummer EV, that means GM is missing a direct competitor to prevent the Blue Oval from cornering the half-ton EV market. While the Chevrolet Silverado EV is one of the vehicles General Motors plans on entering into the market to compete with the F-150 Lightning, there is another, the GMC Sierra EV.
Indeed the GMC Hummer EV will mark the first steps for the brand’s portfolio when it comes to full-size electric trucks, with General Motors intending on rolling out 30 new electric vehicles before 2025 in total. The vehicles will be exclusively built at Detroit’s $2 billion GM Factory Zero plant, formally known as Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly – which at one point built groundbreaking vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac CT6-V. We currently know more about the Chevrolet Silverado EV than the GMC Sierra EV, but it’s likely that both will launch alongside one another in 2023 as 2024 model year vehicles.
What We May Know About The GMC Sierra EV
A peculiar sketch has been posted to the official GM Design Instagram page that could very well be a sneak peek at the secretive GMC Sierra EV, in a similar way how a previous sketch previewed some (but not all) design cues of the updated 2022 Chevrolet Silverado.
Here’s another clue that this image could tease design elements of the upcoming GMC Sierra EV: the illustration by Nathan Zabarsky slightly resembles another sketch by GMC Sierra HD designer Karan Moorjani (pictured below)with sharp edges, a sealed off grille, and powerful lighting proportions. The front fascia of the art features a more futuristic look for the headlights, which should be expected from the Sierra’s first step into an electric future.
If the GMC Sierra EV stats are identical to that of the Chevrolet Silverado EV, it should have a maximum estimated range of 400 miles. And compared to the GMC Hummer EV, the Sierra EV will have to come in at a lower price point to effectively compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, which is possible without all of the off-road hardware.
