GMC VICE PRESIDENT PREDICTS HUMMER EV SUV WILL EVENTUALLY OUTSELL THE TRUCK

A conscious decision was made to launch the pickup truck version of the GMC Hummer EV ahead of the SUV model first. The insights of which you can read all about in one of our exclusive interviews here. Yet despite the head start, GMC Executive Vice President Duncan Aldred believes that the Hummer EV SUV will have the last laugh.

GMC Hummer EV: Pickup Truck Versus SUV

“This was the source of much debate,” said Aldred during a virtual media Q&A, regarding which Hummer EV model to launch first. “We still expect the SUV will become the dominant seller.”

The Buick-GMC Vice President points it to the current overall industry sales mix in the US market.

“While trucks have grown (in sales) massively over the last 3-4 years, the SUV still remains the dominant portion of the industry. Steady state, the Hummer EV SUV will have the dominant side of that. But at the moment it’s about 70/30 in favor of truck.”

While the SUV plays in a bigger sandbox, the Hummer EV pickup truck can deliver more power and range, due to its longer overall length, and its ability to pack more batteries beneath the floor. Case in point, the Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup truck has 1,000 horsepower. The SUV version packs 830 horsepower. Definitely not a fluctuation you see with engines versus body styles. The GMC Sierra and Yukon offer the same horsepower.

Regardless, Aldred believes that the total Hummer EV sales mix will eventually be “maybe somewhere in the region of 60/40 (in favor of SUV).” Aldred didn’t disclose a timeline on when he thinks the Hummer EV SUV would overtake the the truck in sales.

Lastly, Duncan Aldred noted that the GM Factory Zero plant is flexible enough to alternate between which model is demanded more. So at the end of the day, GMC will come out on top.
