FORD MAVERICK PIGGYBACK CONTROLLERS ANNOUNCED BY RACECHIP

With ECU encryption becoming evermore commonplace, the performance aftermarket has been scrambling to create solutions that are both acceptable for customers seeking more power, and will simultaneously not turn the vehicle into a giant paperweight. We’ve seen some clever solutions from the likes of Lingenfelter Performance and Boost District when it comes to the C8 Corvette. But today we’d like to direct your attention to a piggyback ECU system designed for something a big more practical: the Ford Maverick pickup truck. And you can control the whole thing with your phone.

Stuttgart, Germany based company Racechip has announced a trio of piggyback controllers for the 2022 Ford Maverick, which can increase performance some 29 horsepower without having to change anything about the truck.

The Racechip piggyback controller is an electronic device that enhances your engine’s performance and allows you to track its overall performance in real time. With the help of an app you can adjust the characteristics of your vehicle with the tap of a button, you can also switch back to “stock mode” at any time. Racechip is a German based company with lots of bias towards German vehicles however they have unleashed the Racechip for the Ford Maverick.

There are three versions of the race chip for the Maverick, the S, RS, and GTS. All of which get more expensive and offer more options as the letter count grows. The S is the base version that isn’t actually Bluetooth enabled so you will need to manually select your engine performance preference before taking off. The S module offers a boost of 20 horsepower and up to 15-percent better fuel efficiency and will run you about $280. Next up is the “RS” chip that runs about $400. The RS chip offers a boost of 24 horsepower and 20-percent better fuel efficiency as well as 6 tuning mappings, one more than the S chip. The RS chip is also Bluetooth enabled so you can switch modes from the driver’s seat although there is a $50 upcharge to use the app. Lastly the GTS chip boasts the ability to up your engine 29 horsepower in addition to offering 7 different tuning mappings and the ability to reprogram upon switching vehicles.

To get this to work, you’ll need to have a Ford Maverick with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine where, at its base, pushes out 250 horsepower. The standard hybrid version isn’t compatible. So, for under $500 you can boost horsepower and become more fuel efficient without ever having to turn a wrench. But is it technically “tuning” the engine? Depends on who you ask. Either way, adding some power and some upcoming parts from Tucci Hot Rods (pictured below) might be the move if you’re looking to make the perfect pocket pickup truck rocket.
