Rivian has projected a new goal of building 200 R1T all-electric pickup trucks a week starting this year, after narrowly missing its expected production goal last year. The company hopes for overall production numbers to be in the hundreds of thousands by 2023.
Rivian has, like so many others, been affected by supply shortage woes initiated by the Covid-19 crisis. The company is determined however to get back on track and ramp-up production of its R1T pick-up truck. Specifically, Rivian is shooting to build a total of 200 trucks a week. In an effort to reach this goal, production was suspended for almost a week to make adjustments and improvements to it’s assembly plant in Normal, Illinois according to a Bloomberg report. Assuming a 52-week production calendar, and taking into account the week everything was paused, Rivian looks to produce just over 10,000 R1T electric trucks this year.

The Rivian R1T, which beat both the GMC Hummer EV and the Tesla Cybertruck to the market, rolled off the assembly line in September of last year and managed to push out 50 units a week through the month of December. A recent quarterly earnings call revealed Rivian produced 1,015 trucks, delivering 920 of them, which was 185 builds shy of its 1,200 unit production goal.
Besides the R1T, Rivian has been working on pre-production models of the R1S SUV which it hopes to deliver in the coming months. The electric vehicle maker is also in a partnership with Amazon and will be rolling out delivery vans for the company at a different assembly plant later this year. Rivian is supposed to produce 10,000 of those vans by the end of this year. The first R1S production model just recently rolled off the assembly line. The company says it will be capable of building 150,000 vehicles by 2023 at its Normal location. Rivian’s second plant in Georgia will be capable, once built, to crank out 400,000 vehicles a year. The Georgia plant is expected to start production in 2023.
