Leipzig is a modern model of a cycling-friendly city

The city of Leipzig, Germany, has been chosen to host the Velo-city 2023 conference. This choice is quite logical, as Leipzig has demonstrated in recent years its commitment to encouraging cycling and developing infrastructure to support the activity.

The 2023 edition of Velo-city will take place in Leipzig from June 27 to 30. The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) chose the German city in recognition of its sustainable urban development policies and its ambitions to develop cycling as a means of transport for the future.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the whole face of Leipzig has changed. And the bicycle has played a major role in the city's transformation. This is reflected in the many changes in urban mobility, with more and more space and comfort allotted for cyclists.

Currently one third of Leipzig's population already travels regularly by bicycle --nearly every day, whether for work, recreation or sport. In fact, the number of cyclists in Leipzig has more than doubled within 20 years. Between 2010 and 2020 alone, its bicycle network grew from 376km to 526 km. A new plan, recently adopted by the city council, aims to further increase the number of cyclists in the city.

Every year, the Velo-city event brings together industry, politicians, associations and various decision-makers to discuss the future of cycling. The 2022 edition will take place in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, June 14 -17.
