The 56th annual Easter Jeep Safari is here, and we have a total of 10 concepts from Jeep for the 2022 event. Last year, the Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept demonstrated that a battery-electric propulsion system would be faithful to the Wrangler’s heritage of on-road and off-road capability. A demonstration of Jeep’s dedication to Zero Emissions Freedom. One year later, we now have the Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept, amped up to carry you farther off the beaten path.
The Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept’s powertrain includes:
- Custom-built axial flux electric motor that operates up to 5,250 rpm
- six-speed manual transmission for ultimate control over the propulsion system
- Four lithium-ion battery packs, distributed throughout the chassis for weight balance, with a combined power of 70 kW/h, running an 800-volt system
- An inverter derived from race cars converts DC power to AC for the high-tech motor
Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0: Specs
Peak amperage in the propulsion system is more than doubled to 600 amps, giving the Magneto 2.0 the ability to instantly deliver up to 850 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels, that’s more than triple the torque output of the previous edition. Additionally, 625 ponies sit under the hood to help provide serious power to overcome any obstacle thrown its way. The new electric powertrain can maintain peak amperage for up to 10 seconds, functioning like a nitrous boost. As such, 0-60 acceleration times come in at just 2.0 seconds. Two. Seconds.
Perhaps this technology is a hint of what’s to come over at Dodge?
The gear ratio for the manual transmission was switched from 5.13 to 3.36. When combined with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon‘s Rock-Trac transfer case, the Magneto 2.0 offers exquisite rock-crawling capability with its instant on-demand torque. In addition, the driver-selectable maximum generation function allows for true “one-pedal” driving.
The Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 also received some modifications to the body, including 12 inches added to the wheelbase to create extra room for powertrain components while giving the vehicle similar proportions to the “LJ” Wrangler Unlimited from 2004-06. A 3-inch lift kit and 40-inch off-road tires mounted on 20-inch wheels augment the vehicle’s overall look. The Magneto 2.0 is also equipped with a Dynatrac 60 Pro-Rock front axle and a massive Pro-Rock Dynatrac 80 rear axle with a 5.38 ratio. Both axles are equipped with lockers, a custom driveshaft was made for the vehicle, and the entire thing rides on off-road suspension.
Lightweight bumpers replace the factory ones, and Carbon fiber wheel flares cover the wide tires without adding to the vehicle’s weight. The Magneto 2.0 is coated in Surf Blue paint, while a custom carbon-fiber B-pillar, bikini top, and carbon-fiber hood help give the Wrangler its powerful look. The hood is also custom and features a blue-tinted, transparent window to let passengers and others around see what’s going on underneath.
