We’ve seen some S650 Ford Mustang prototypes popping up lately as engineers continue to power through its development process. This has caused many people to get excited as they try to understand what lies underneath all the camouflage, even as various design leaks have surfaced. The most recent photos that have emerged features five S650 Mustangs in a row at the top of the legendary Pikes Peak.
The photo that was posted onto Mustang7G is the only one that was taken during that time. One of the cars had its window open, which could have been an opportunity for a quick interior photo, but it was best to play it safe if the team was nearby. The car in the middle has wheels we haven’t yet seen on a prototype, single five-spoke rims. We also can’t help but wonder how quickly the vehicles made it up the mountain. At close to 14,000 feet, the team definitely tested how the pony cars perform at high altitudes, evaluating core vitals like engine/oil temps, horsepower output at that altitude, and other components.
S650 Ford Mustang: What To Expect
Based on the spy photos and the shape of the S650 Ford Mustang, we can see that it isn’t riding on a new platform but is an evolution of the S550. The highly anticipated next-generation Mustang will be a major product refresh rather than something entirely new. The interior and the exterior design will be redone, and there will be a new electrical architecture to go with it. While the new Ford Mustang won’t be in production until the 2024 model year, we will be seeing its debut sometime later this year.
With the market is turning in the direction of electrification, many are wondering what powertrains the anticipated muscle car will have. As we exclusively reported last fall, the S650 Ford Mustang will have a 2.3L EcoBoost turbo four and 5.0L Coyote V8, with the 760 hp 5.2L Predator V8 following after. Later down the line, there will be a refresh that’s expected to add hybrid power to the pony car. Then again, hybrid power was speculated for the S550 model once upon a time, too.
