GM Defense has recently announced that they are taking an important step to further expand its offerings across the globe by promoting a newly formed entity, GM Defense International. The goal is to extend the brand’s reach into global markets to support U.S. allies and partners’ transition to a more electric, autonomous, and connected future. The subsidiary will continue to operate as a subsidiary of its parent company, General Motors.
GM Defense: Global Expansion Details
The creation of GM Defense International enables GM to expand its global presence across international defense and government markets. It establishes a well-experienced and proven team to build and nurture customer relationships. The entity will focus on the unique requirements of its global customers operating in dynamic and evolving environments. They plan to explore opportunities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific region, and more. GM Defense has already begun expanding to Canada, leveraging the existing relationships of GM Canada and its parent company’s advanced technologies and capabilities. And besides, Canada is an easy swimming distance from Detroit.
With GM’s $35 billion corporate investment in transformational technologies, GM Defense is well-positioned to support international growth with its defense and government customers. In addition, benefitting from the investments General Motors has made in Canada, the subsidiary is well-positioned to have the agility to meet Canadian military requirements with potential made-in-Canada solutions. Working as one team alongside GM Canada, Bradley Watters, GM Defense’s new vice president of International Business Development, and Pete Johnson, GM Defense’s new vice president of Integrated Vehicle Business Development, will lead military customer engagement.
GM Defense showcased some of its solutions and discussed its capabilities at Canada’s global defense and security trade show on June 1-2, 2022. Additionally, they did the same at Eurosatory at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre on June 13-17. Additionally, GM has shared a photo of their new Light Utility Vehicle prototype, which is pictured at the very top of this article. It’s certainly based on the T1 platform of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and we see several similarities between these civilian trucks and this new military vehicle. This includes the foldable tow mirrors, doors, and truck bed. Like the current ISSV military truck, which is based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, this larger truck is likely based on the larger Chevrolet Silverado ZR2.
