S650 Ford Mustang Hybrid: What To Expect
Hybridization appears inevitable for the next generation Ford Mustang. While it won’t be available at launch, it could happen by 2025, and the latest report suggests both engines will get an electric boost option. Ford could accomplish this with a version of their Modular Hybrid Transmission (MHT). Among the electrification possibilities, enthusiasts will likely be the most interested in the V8 hybrid powertrain revealed in patent drawings. It mounts a roughly alternator-sized electric motor on each side of the V8, with its output shafts aligned with the crankshaft centerline.
This setup is far simpler than trying to package a single electric motor somewhere and needing to run a shaft through the oil pan. Using dual motors will also allow handling-enhancing torque vectoring, and this system could power the next Mach 1 or something similar. Rumors have also hinted at a plug-in version offering at least 10 to 20 miles of electric range, which would boost efficiency and possibly contribute to higher corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) ratings for 2026. If there is an efficiency-focused Ford Mustang hybrid, expect it to be an EcoBoost with rear drive.
Once there’s a battery and an MHT to work with on the Mustang platform, it’s not hard to imagine pairing them with the V8 and front motors, boosting the Coyote V8 and motor outputs. It could mark the creation of a worthy Shelby GT500 successor with fantastic torque-vectored AWD performance and EPA numbers that could avoid the Gas Guzzler Tax.
