General Motors President Mark Reuss recently gave a presentation during GM Investor Day 2022. And while there’s plenty to take in from the massive day, one major data point is that General Motors could take the overall sales win in the truck wars, which would upset Ford Motor Company and the heralded F-Series lineup.
Chevrolet And GMC Truck Sales Topping The Charts?
“We are refreshing key ICE vehicles as we transition (to electrification). To illustrate the demand for our ICE portfolio, here are some numbers through Q3,” said Reuss. “GM retail market share is up 0.7 points over last year. In addition, GM retail market share is growing in the ICE-dominated segments where we already lead all other OEMs based on JD Power pin calendar year to date through Q3 ’22.”

“For instance, large pickups, up nearly 3 points with our HD pickups taking nearly 52 percent of the HD market share in October, and nearly 49 percent calendar year to date,” Reuss stated. “In fact, JD Power pin shows September Silverado HD with a lead over Ford F-Series HD in retail market share.”
This projection means that Ford could be seeing an end to the Super Duty’s long reign of being the best-selling commercial light duty truck in the United States; a title that Chevrolet has long been chasing. The same could happen to the F-150 in the half-ton truck market. However, when tallied together, the two-sided strategy that GM enjoys with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks tends to tip the scales to the Detroit-based automaker.
General Motors executives haven’t been shy in saying that its high-volume, high-margin trucks and SUVs powered by both gasoline and diesel engines are funding every electric vehicle program in development. And that won’t be changing anytime soon. Reuss has previously stated that the next-generation of GM trucks will also be engine powered, selling alongside electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra variants.
All that being said, the final scores have yet to be tallied, and it could come down to a Ford buzzer beater to keep the championship.
