A college head coach becoming an NFL head coach cannot truly be considered to be unexpected. Many have made the transition with varying degrees of success. Jim Harbaugh has done it twice now. Nick Saban did it, as did Pete Carroll, Barry Switzer, John McKay and Matt Rhule. Half a century ago there were rumors of Nebraska's Bob Devaney making the jump, though thankfully, he never did. But the case of Jeff Hafley leaving his role as head coach at Boston College last week to take what many would consider a demotion as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator has a different feel to it. Appare...

Nebraska football's offseason has officially begun. Head coach Matt Rhule told reporters that he's already on to Year 2 after conducting postseason exit meetings with every player on the roster. There are half a dozen key players with eligibility remaining who have decisions to make regarding their futures at Nebraska. Ty Robinson and Ben Scott have already decided to return. Now we wait and see if guys like Isaac Gifford, John Bullock, Bryce Benhart and Nash Hutmacher decide to run it back too. The transfer portal officially opened Monday, and so far we've seen just one scholarship player - t...

The transfer portal is open and movement across the collegiate landscape is heavy. For Nebraska football, there are plenty of areas of need in both retention as well as acquisition during this offseason. The Huskers went 5-7 in 2023 and missed a seventh consecutive bowl season. Head coach Matt Rhule has a positive approach to the portal. "I honestly don’t see any of it as stressful," Rhule told reporters back on Nov. 20. "I 100 percent am in this position to help young people say they had a better life because they played for me, that’s 100 percent why I do it." Rhule has a couple criteria he ...

Coach Matt Rhule has stated on several occasions his goal to re-establish Nebraska as the premier developmental program in college football. He's a known program builder who orchestrated eye-opening turnarounds for downtrodden programs Temple (2013-16) and Baylor (2017-19). At a historically awful Temple program, Rhule won 10 games in back-to-back seasons and won an AAC title in 2016. Prior to that, Temple had only one season (1979) of double-digit wins in school history, which dates back to 1930. It was also the program's first conference title since 1967. In Waco, Rhule inherited an embattle...

Immediate help for Nebraska football is on the way or already on campus The loosening of transfer rules and an urgency to win have generated unprecedented roster churn in the six months since the end of Nebraska football's 2021 season. Here is a look at the new faces joining the Huskers via the NCAA transfer portal. Several arrived in Lincoln in January and took part in spring drills. Some have just one season to leave their mark, while others have up to four. Not included here are players coming directly from junior colleges, the more traditional transfer source. Heights, weights and other bi...

Betts and McCaffrey Move On from Nebraska Last week, I wrote about Husker WR Zavier Betts leaving the Husker football program. He left the team and may never play football again. Or maybe he could enter the transfer portal and play football somewhere else this fall. Or he might even come back to Nebraska. Who knows? The reason for his departure? Some say he was burned out. He's had it with playing football. And that's okay. My hope is that all players who decide to leave the Husker football program go on to lead happy, productive lives however they choose. Some of you (and you know who you are...

CEO-turned-coach talks NCAA, transfer portal and NIL Joe Moglia has a lot of things to say about the NCAA, name, image, likeness and the transfer portal. The Doc Talk Podcast is the perfect place for him to speak freely and unfiltered. The former Coastal Carolina head coach recently penned an article for Forbes where he discussed whether or not the NCAA should break up. You can read it at this link. This podcast goes from 0 to 100 in about 30 seconds and keeps the pedal to the metal for almost an hour and a half. Moglia’s college football coaching career is unlike most everyone in the professi...

Dr. Rob tells us how much he thinks it took to get the former Texas quarterback to come to Lincoln Now that we have your attention, let's explain. If you are a Nebraska fan, the good news is that the Huskers finally have a committed quarterback. Former Texas starter Casey Thompson, who has two years of eligibility remaining, has said he's coming to Lincoln. His numbers as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns were impressive despite NOT leading Texas to a bowl game. He'll compete with Logan Smothers for the starting position. We would be shocked to start the 2022 season when Nebraska open...

Husker Dan gives an update on the transfer portal and special teams for Nebraska. Last week, I wrote a column about special teams not being so special. I pointed out that of the top 25 football programs in FBS, seven of them had losing seasons in 2021. And another thing I discovered is the last place special teams program (Western Michigan) actually had a winning season (8-5)! I also opined that the Huskers may have lost about 15 games over the past four seasons due to special teams meltdowns. Nebraska may have improved its lot in special teams by getting some players via the transfer portal w...
