Congressman Morelle Urges DOJ Investigation Into Fake Biden Robocall

Congressman Joseph Morelle (D-NY) has issued a letter to the Justice Department, urging an investigation into a fake robocall featuring an AI-generated message in President Biden’s voice.

The call falsely advised voters not to participate in New Hampshire’s Tuesday primary, with someone mimicking Biden’s voice suggesting that voting on that Tuesday would benefit Republicans in their quest to re-elect Donald Trump.

In the letter, Morelle called for a thorough investigation and a strong response from federal officials to address the interference in the New Hampshire primary. He emphasized the need to deter future AI-based attacks that could disrupt American democracy and disenfranchise voters.

“This clear bid to interfere in the New Hampshire primary demands a thorough investigation and a forceful response from federal officials to deter further AI-based attacks that will disrupt American democracy and disenfranchise American voters,” Morelle stated in his letter.

Morelle expressed hope that an investigation into the specific robocall could contribute to preventing “AI-generated mis- and disinformation in future elections.” He conveyed a willingness to collaborate with law enforcement to enhance their ability to detect and prevent AI-based attempts to subvert elections, emphasizing the importance of establishing meaningful and well-defined standards to protect democracy.
