Peter Schmeichel dropped ultimate compliment on Man Utd talent who could reach same ‘stardom’ as three legends

Peter Schmeichel believes that Rasmus Hojlund “could be looked” at in a bracket featuring three club legends after the Manchester United striker’s performance against Luton Town.

Rasmus Hojlund endured a tough start to life in the Premier League after Manchester United signed him in a £72m deal from Atalanta last summer.

The 21-year-old United striker went his first 14 Premier League matches without scoring, despite finding the back of the net five times in six Champions League appearances.

However, Hojlund has since entered into a rich vein of form and the ex-Atalanta man has scored eight times in his last eight matches across all competitions for United.

The Denmark international opened the scoring inside the first minute against Luton Town before the United star completed his brace at Kenilworth Road six minutes later.

Hojlund has now scored in his last six consecutive Premier League appearances for United, with Schmeichel praising his fellow countryman’s explosive form.

Schmeichel’s big compliment on Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund has now taken his goalscoring tally to 13 in 30 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United this season.

The United striker has scored seven times and registered two assists in 20 Premier League appearances, with Erik ten Hag thrilled with Hojlund’s turnaround in form.

Peter Schmeichel highlighted that Hojlund had reached a feat at United that only Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Eric Cantona had done before him.

The United legend has insisted that Hojlund could be looked at in the same bracket as the aforementioned legends if he can maintain his form at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel hailed the Danish forward as a “fantastic” and “strong” player, but he added that his United teammates need to “understand him a little bit better.”

Speaking on Premier League Productions, he said: “And he’s [Hojlund] in good company.

“There are only three other Man United players that have ever done that: scoring six in a row.

“It’s Van Nistelrooy, he’s done it three times. Then Cristiano Ronaldo. And who was the last one? Cantona!

“But he’s [Hojlund] in good company, though. And with him, I’m not saying, he’s only 21, right?

“He’s promising a lot, so I’m saying that he could be looked at in that bracket. That he could move into that stardom, that guy that puts the ball away and scores 25, 30 goals a season.

“He has got that; we’ve seen that again today. He’s got everything in his locker.

“I think the team needs to understand him a little bit better. But that will take time and that will come with time.

“But the guy is fantastic, man, he’s strong, he gets the chances. He missed one today, but he scored two.”

Hojlund ‘annoyed’ with Man Utd conceding

Speaking after the Luton Town clash, Hojlund admitted his frustration at United conceding after the Red Devils made a superb start to the Premier League match.

“[We had] a good beginning, two good and fast goals and then we drop off a little bit, we get unfocused and they get one back,” he told Sky Sports.

“We know with this crowd and this pitch and this atmosphere, 2-1 is always a dangerous result and then we go to the break.

“I think actually we created a lot of chances in the second half, we just need to score. I have one as well and yeah, a little bit annoyed by that.”
