Report: Newcastle now hope to sign £51m Brazilian player who Arsenal also want

Newcastle United’s summer preparations are already well underway despite the latest obstacle of losing their Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth had been key in helping the club attract some of the most exciting young talent from around the world and that’s not going to change even though he’s now leaving for Man United.

A report from Globo Esporte now suggests that Newcastle have been monitoring the situation of 18-year-old Alisson Santana who has been impressing in the youth ranks of Atletico Mineiro.

Newcastle prepared to battle Arsenal for exciting winger

Newcastle’s long-term goal is to be one of the most successful clubs in world football, and to do that they must establish themselves by not only bringing in star first-team quality but also exciting young talents.

In the couple of years sine the new owners took over the club they have signed the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Garang Kuol as well as a host of academy talents who have started work in Newcastle’s youth sides.

While supporters may not be able to see the benefits of these signings just yet, the owners are trying to secure the clubs long-term future by making these long-term investments.

Santana has been tipped to be another top talent, but Newcastle will face tough competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Fulham who also want to bring him in.

Santana is expected to make the move to Europe

At just 18-years-old Santana is believed to have a very bright future in football despite playing just eight times for Atletico Mineiro’s first team and has previously attracted interest from all over Europe.

Feyenoord, PSV and Bayer Leverkusen are just three teams who have taken a particular interest in the winger, though he is protected by a £51m release clause which is club insisted on.

Santana also has a contract lasting until 2027 which makes things a little bit difficult for whoever wants to sign him as there will be little room for negotiating on the price.

Newcastle won’t want to be beaten by one of their rivals but it’s unclear whether they would be willing to stump up that kind of cash on a player who will be one for the future.
